Mauve

by Shaina Wexler

/

about

Born from the unexpected death of a close friend, “Mauve” explores the feelings of emotional, creative and physical muting in the face of loss and grief. It captures the helplessness of wanting to reach someone who is now too far away to ever touch. Haunting piano, fragile, emotive female vocals, and mournful strings sections carry this sorrowful ballad.

lyrics

Grief has grasped my voice
And strangled it to a whisper
Oh, how can I heal
If my song is just a whimper
Will you even hear I sing for you?

Ahhs

Grief has grasped my voice
The flow at one disabled
When breathe is caught by tears
Can a sound be more than feeble?
Will these floating chords even reach to you?

Ahhhs

We now assemble here to say a last “adieu”
But I arrive still hoping for a glimpse of you
You’d try to find my laugh, this much I know is true
Alone, I sit and try to sing off-key with you

Grief has grasped my voice
The mauve becomes just purple
Is time the only force
That makes a muted grip unfurl?

I strain to find my voice
Could the hostage be the savior
And with every note that trills
Flits of hope defy the waver
I'll reach until I know you hear
I sing for you
